German claw mounts have been the traditional mount ever since scopes were first used for hunting. They are still the mount of choice for double rifles, drillings, combination guns, custom magazine rifles and special rifles like the Mannlicher-Schoenauer.

There are few mounts that allow the scope to be removed and reinstalled as quickly and conveniently as on the German claw mount. It also provides the most reliable return to zero of any detachable mount made.

Claw mounts are not interchangeable! Each must be individually fitted to close tolerances. This requires the skill of an experienced gunsmith. Since this is very time-consuming, German claw mounts are the most expensive. Beware of a "cheap job," that will probably not be worth having.

A wide variety of rings and bases are available to fit most guns. New rings can be fitted to existing bases, as well. When choosing a scope, it is very important to remember that due to the way the scope is removed (by lifting it up in the rear), it should not extend very far past the front ring. This, as well as eye relief, must be taken into account when choosing a scope. It is best to let us (or another qualified gunsmith) advise you on the proper scope and mount combination. We must have the scope in order to install a claw mount.

When installing a scope on a double rifle which was not regulated for a scope, we often find that although you can see better, the gun may shoot differently than with open sights. We can re-regulate the gun for an additional cost.
